About Richard
Artistic Statement
“I am a choreographer, movement artist and director, I create work across a varied spectrum of professional engagements; from full evening classical works to contemporary narrative dance theatre, to musical theatre, film and TV. I am drawn to themes and narratives that explore human stories, often work with an historical context, sometimes light and comic, as well as work that centres on pathos and psychological realism. I am motivated to reveals truths relevant to a contemporary audience.
In contrast I am equally at home creating work with and for children and young people, as well as being an experienced educator and workshop facilitator.
I am increasingly drawn to creating theatre and film that utilise multimedia and cross arts collaboration. I would say that I am largely driven to build new artistic working relationships by a desire to share and learn new artistic languages and ideas.”
I am a London based choreographer and director, having enjoyed a varied performance career, I have had my work commissioned both in the UK and internationally. Notably working on series 5 of The Crown, creating a production of ‘Swan Lake’ for The National Ballet of Ireland, ‘La Belle Époque’ for Ballet Central, ‘Silk: The Eternal Road’, an original musical production in Beijing, and ‘…Of What’s to Come’ for English National Ballet’s 70th Anniversary Gala.
I was appointed Creative Director of ENBYouthCo in 2019 where I continue to direct this dynamic group of young artist under the auspice on English National Ballet. I also received a masters degree in choreography from the University of Kent, under the direction Central School of Ballet.
Since 2016 I have been part of the teaching faculty of London Studio Centre. I have also had opportunities to develop the student’s own creativity, having choreographed for the school’s annual ‘Dance Overture’ performances at the New Wimbledon Theatre.
As a dancer I performed with K-Ballet Tokyo, Tivoli Ballet, The National Ballet of Ireland, English National Ballet, Peter Schaufuss Ballet, Opera North and English National Opera. I trained at Central School of Ballet and was a recipient of the OneDanceUK Leadership Mentoring award in 2015/16.
